Replacement car keys cut and programmed at your car

We handle car key replacement in Vancouver on site, for lost, broken and worn keys. The car stays where it is parked, and you leave with a key that starts it.

A modern car key has two parts. The blade is cut to fit your car's locks, and the chip or fob is programmed to its immobilizer so the engine will start.

  • Cut to codeBlade cut by key code or read from the lock, not traced from a worn key
  • Chip programmedTransponder chip programmed to your car's immobilizer
  • Remote pairedRemote buttons paired: lock, unlock and trunk, where the key has them
  • Push-to-startPush-to-start smart keys programmed on supported models
  • Lost keys erasedLost keys removed from the car's memory where the system allows it
  • Tested before we leaveEvery key tested at the doors, on the remote and on the engine before we leave

A snapped or worn key is replaced the same way as a lost one. Keep the pieces, since the old key can help us read the cut and the chip.

► 02 / Lost every key

Lost every key or just need a spare?

These are two different jobs. With one working key left, we copy it: the blade is cut to match, and a new chip is added alongside the ones the car already knows.

No key left

With no key left, there is nothing to copy. The blade is cut by code or from the lock, and the car is programmed to accept a fresh set.

Old keys stop working

An all-keys-lost job usually also stops the missing keys from starting the car. That matters if they vanished in a public lot or a gym locker room.

Down to one key

If your household is down to one key, now is the cheapest time to call. A spare costs less than starting over from nothing.

Car key replacement pricing in Vancouver

The chip, the buttons and the make decide what your key costs. The total for your address is confirmed on the call before a technician is sent.

See our locksmith prices, including lockouts and ignition work.

► 04 / What we need

What we need from you: ownership and ID

We check before we cut or program any car key. Bring government photo ID and proof you own the car, such as the BC registration in your name.

Name must match

The name on your ID should match the ownership papers. If the car is leased or belongs to a company, tell us on the call and we will explain what to bring.

Papers in the car

If the papers are inside the locked car, say so when you call. You also need to be at the car when the technician gets there.

► 05 / The visit

How an on-site car key replacement works

The chip side is explained on transponder key programming. Remotes and push-to-start fobs have their own page, key fob replacement.

01

Call with the car details

Year, make, model, and whether any working key is left. That decides the blank and the programming route, and we confirm the total on the call.

02

We meet you at the car

Street, lane, driveway or parkade. Parkade access is the building's to grant, so arrange for someone to let us in. Arrival is confirmed on the call.

03

Cut, program, test

We check your ID and ownership, cut the blade, program the chip and pair any buttons. The job isn't finished until the engine runs on the new key.

► 06 / Mobile car key

Mobile car key replacement or the dealer?

For most cars, the mobile route saves a tow. A car with no working key can't be driven to a dealer, so it would have to be towed there first.

Dealer-only vehicles

Some vehicles can only be keyed through the dealer. If yours is one of them, we tell you on the call, before anyone is sent.

Other car jobs

Locked out, or an ignition that won't turn? Our car locksmith page lists every automotive job we do.

► 07 / Makes we replace

Makes we replace keys for

We replace keys for most makes on Vancouver roads. Coverage for some newer or European models depends on the year, so we check yours while you are on the phone.

Make-by-make pages

Four makes have detailed pages on their keys and chips: Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen.

Cutting isn't enough

A cut blade with no programming won't start most cars built in the last twenty-odd years. That second step needs programming equipment, and it happens at your car.

► 08 / Questions

Car key replacement questions

More on the FAQ page.

01

What if I've lost every key?

It's routine. We cut a key by code or from the lock and program the car to accept it. Proof of ownership comes first, and the total is confirmed on the call.

02

Can you program a fob I bought online?

Sometimes. Online fobs vary in quality, and some can't be programmed at all. We look at yours first and tell you honestly whether it is worth trying.

03

Will my lost key still start the car?

On most cars, an all-keys-lost job clears the old keys from memory. Ask us on the call how it works for your model.

04

My car is in a residents-only parkade. Can you still come?

Yes, as long as someone lets the technician in. Give us the level and stall number. We don't open gates or program building fobs.

05

Can I get a spare at the same time?

Yes. Ask when you book. A second key cut and coded on the same visit is the simplest way to avoid an all-keys-lost call later.
