Most doors don't need new hardware. A rekey retires the old keys for far less than a new lock.
Rekey when the lock works well and you only need the old keys to stop working. The technician re-pins the cylinder you already have and cuts new keys to match.
Change the lock when it's worn, corroded, forced in a break-in, or too light for an entry door. Change it too if you want a different kind, such as a keypad deadbolt.

A new home. You can't know how many copies of the old keys exist. Past owners, trades, dog walkers and neighbours may all have had one. Rekey when you move in.
A lost key. If it carried your address or went missing with your ID, rekey as soon as you can. If it's simply gone, a rekey still settles the question.
A tenant change. Landlords often rekey between tenants so a former tenant's key stops working. Tenants should check their tenancy agreement and get the landlord's OK first.

In a strata building, the lock on your own suite door is usually yours to rekey or change. That's where our work stops.
Lobby doors, parkade gates, common-area locks and building fobs belong to the strata or the property manager. We don't copy, program or open them.
A rekey keeps the brand and finish the building sees, so it rarely raises bylaw questions. Replacing the whole lockset can need council approval. Check your bylaws before you book.
Some buildings put suite doors on a building key system. If yours does, the strata decides who can change that cylinder.
Many older Vancouver houses use mortise locks: a lock body set into the edge of the door, not a cylinder bored through its face. You'll find plenty in Shaughnessy.
A removable mortise cylinder can be re-pinned while the original hardware stays on the door. Old skeleton-key locks have no pins, so a key is fitted to the lock instead.
A modern deadbolt won't drop into a mortise pocket. Replacing one means finding a matching mortise lock, or filling and re-cutting the door edge, which is carpentry.
If your house has heritage protection, check with the City before changing an original exterior door. A separate deadbolt above the mortise lock is often the simplest upgrade.
Front, back, side and garage: most homes can run on one key if the locks share a keyway. We rekey the locks to match and cut the keys you need.
If the locks use different keyways, one or two cylinders may need replacing first. You'll hear which, and the cost, before any work starts.

Most newer doors take standard hardware without new drilling. Older doors can have odd backsets or worn bores. We measure first and confirm the fit before removing anything.
At the same grade, yes. The pins are new and every old key stops working. A worn or low-grade lock is the case where replacing it is the better buy.
Usually, yes. The cylinder has to be opened or removed first, which can add to the price. Tell us on the call that there's no working key.
A rekey normally doesn't, because nothing visible changes. Replacing the lockset may, depending on your bylaws. Ask your council or property manager before you book.
